Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere Packaging (EMAP)

Fruits and vegetables stay fresh longer if you apply a package which accomodates their respiration.

With equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging (EMAP), micro-perforations in the film allow an equilibrium modified atmosphere to develop, thereby extending the shelf life of the product.

EMAP is an equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging system for extending the shelf life of:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Unprocessed produce
  • Prepared produce (cut, sliced, diced etc.)

  • Longer shelf life without the use of preservatives
  • Calibration of precise package environments
  • Strong, sealed pack prevents handling at the POS
  • Stackable packs for structured presentation at the POS

Micro-perforation adjusts the permeability of the film to the respiration rate of the individual product. Fresh oxygen is drawn in to replace the oxygen consumed by respiration, while excess carbon dioxide can escape.

Passive EMAP: Equilibrium is achieved naturally after a certain period of time. Product shelf life is extended.

Active EMAP: Equilibrium is achieved with the introduction of a prescribed modified atmosphere. Product shelf life is further extended.

EMAP can be produced using

  • Pre-perforated films
  • Standard films with MULTIVAC perforation unit
